BIRD ST. RESIDENCE - NEEDHAM, MA
The primary goal for this project was to expand the main floor of an existing house to include a new study and front entry porch, and an enlarged kitchen/breakfast, family room, and garage. An additional goal was to change the look of this typical Colonial style house to become distinctly more interesting and exciting. The major design restriction was to work within the site’s extremely tight and unique layout and its code-required setbacks
Using the site setback lines as a reference, The addition was viewed as a composition of the boxy existing Colonial forms, and the diagonally oriented new construction elements. By working creatively with the building’s allowable interior limits, a tight, mundane space was transformed into a spacious and dynamic family gathering place.
